DocuSign Launches ‘Gateway’ for Seamless Online Signing -- First Online Web Service to get Documents Signed

Seattle, WA – December 8, 2004 - DocuSign, Inc., the nation’s leading online signing service, today introduced its Gateway service, the first-ever complete Web service portal for signing documents online. The DocuSign Gateway service now enables firms to integrate online signing capability into existing applications via a Web service interface without having to invest in complex security and management systems.

DocuSign is revolutionizing how companies conduct transactions by enabling documents to be sent for legally binding signatures electronically in seconds from within existing applications or Websites. Gathering legal signatures online empowers firms to eliminate paper handling and postage fees, and close business much faster.

“We hope to bring online signing capability to every business in America,” says Court Lorenzini, DocuSign CEO. This is a major new capability for DocuSign because it enables firms to automate the task of getting documents signed via our Web service. Call center databases or Websites can now get a customer signature in a matter of minutes,” he added.

The DocuSign Gateway operates like an online credit card processing portal. The sending application merely submits the document for signature, along with signing instructions, in an Extensible Markup Language (XML) format to the DocuSign Gateway, which acts as a clearing house to get the document signed and copies returned. Through the online signing interface, the DocuSign Gateway provides an automated way of getting documents signed and offers total control and security over the full transaction. Moreover, the signing process for the consumer is easier than any other online signing service because it does not require recipients to have complex digital certificates, pen tablets or specialized software.

Recipients are invited via email to authenticate and securely review documents, and then sign or initial where indicated. Each user receives a unique and secure DocuSign Electronic Signature, and then clicks to place this signature and initials where required.

DocuSign emails all signers a printed or electronic copy of the completed documents, along with a Certificate of Signing, which outlines the evidence of the signature process. The service maintains a 100% audit control throughout, complete with time-stamping for all steps and a transaction summary.

The DocuSign Gateway service utilizes Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), allowing programs to communicate with one another between operating systems, and Web Services Description Language (WSDL), which makes the integration easy. The compliance of Gateway with SOAP and WSDL assists in producing a ‘round trip’ online signing capability within a company’s existing enterprise applications, creating the final step in the online customer relationship.

The DocuSign online signing service is also available as a Desktop client application, which is compatible with all Windows applications. Using the Desktop version DocuSign, a sender merely ‘prints’ documents from any Windows application into a DocuSign Envelope, where contents are encrypted and stored on a secured server, and simply drags yellow ‘sign-here’ and ‘initial here’ Stick-eTabs™ onto the document to ensure a complete signing every time. Documents are then sent for signature through the same service as Gateway.
